Ceramics: Wood-Fired: Autash 2008

The following vessels are from Hadi Abbas's "Autash" cross-draft kiln in Orlando, FL during its first firing in over 5 years.  In wood firing, many weeks and months are spent gathering and splitting enough pine and oak to prepare for the 7-10 day firing.  An experienced team of potters is required for around the clock stoking of wood.  The kiln must also be slow-cooled over several days to allow the natural ash glaze to mature and to prevent any cracking. Most commonly, no pre-glaze is used in wood firing.  All of these vessels received their color from ash that melts and sticks to the pieces between 2200-2400 degrees Fahrenheit.
