10" Coil-formed Vase
This handmade coiled and pinched vase has a natural wood ash glaze from Florida pine and oak. This was fired in an anagama kiln for 10 days.
As you can see in the images, this vase received an incredible amount of ash buildup from sitting in the front fire box region, resulting in a heavy molten ash drip accumulation on the side it was laying on. Unfortunately, with this much ash melt, some problems often occur: this piece has a dunting crack from the cool-down and is no longer functional (cannot hold water) and serves only as a beautiful sculptural vessel. The crack has been repaired with epoxy and real gold leaf similar to the Japanese repair technique called kintsugi. Seashell markings on the side were to protect the work from fusing to the kiln floor.
There are some remarkable surface crystals that have formed, as well as a myriad of different colors and textures, from smooth and glossy to rough and crunchy. If you are a fan of the wood-firing process, this piece shows off just about every possible result from a wood kiln -- a truly one-of-a-kind piece!
